Just as David is restoring his kingship in Jerusalem, another rebellion breaks out. Sheba, a Benjamite, convinces the 10 tribes to end their loyalty to David and go “back to your tents.” David sends troops in pursuit. Joab, his old general, takes the opportunity to murder the new general Amasa during the chase. Eventually the revolt is put down and Sheba loses his head. Joab is reinstated as general.

Notes on 2 Samuel 20:1-26

Because of David’s grief for his rebellious son Absalom, there was a cloud over his recent victory. Joab brings David to his senses, but more trouble is brewing as David tries to consolidate his support among the tribes.

Notes on 2 Samuel 19:1-43

When the armies of Absalom and David clash, Absalom is defeated, and is ensnared in the branches of a tree by his hair. Despite David’s order to spare his life, Joab executes him. Absalom’s end remarkably mirrors that of another betrayer – Judas.

Notes on 2 Samuel 18:1-33

Absalom discards Ahithophel’s counsel in favor of the plan of Hushai. David’s spies are almost caught, but saved by a quick-thinking woman. Ahithophel, like Judas, commits suicide as the armies of David and Absalom face off east of the Jordan River in Gilead.

Notes on 2 Samuel 17:1-29

David’s flight from the city of Jerusalem gives an opportunity to see who his real friends are. His weak position gives other enemies opportunity to direct their resentments at him. Old grievances come to the surface, and true loyalties are confirmed.
