July 8, 2014 – The Burnt Offering

A sweet savor to God – it’s the basis of fellowship, and it requires the recognition of your own death.

Leviticus 21:6-21

The blemish is our self-seeking. Christ’s life was a given life.

Burnt offering = Hebrew word ollah

Lev. 23:11,   Isaiah 59:16

July 7, 2014 – Sweet Savor Offerings

July 7, 2014 – Sweet Savor Offerings

A side trip to talk about the Offerings.  Sweet Savor offerings signify acceptance.

Ephesians 5:1-2

II Cor. 2:14-16 – Christ could not have been the sin offering if he were not first  acceptable as the burnt offering, without blemish. Shed blood means a death happens. We must accept our own death.

The altar is the table of God.

The variety of offerings were dove, goat, bullock—the bullock being the highest offering; the smaller animals were sometimes confused with the trespass offering.

Psalm 49:18 – to “Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.”  But we no longer eat whata the world eats.

Rev. 3:20 –  Behold I stand at the door and knock…

Sin and trespass offerings were required. Sweet savor offerings were voluntary, a celebration of acceptance.

Romans 4:4 – “to him that worketh”

Always something more to do, it never stops. It leaves us in debt internally. The higher the shame level, the more we are affected. Never enough. The harder we work, the more work there is we have to do.

Colossians 2:9-14 – “blotting out the handwiring against us and nailing on the cross”

Christ’s first recorded statement was, “I must be about my Father’s business.”

More on shame – Hebrews 12:2

No facial expression associated with shame. a powerful driving force for both accomplishment and murder. Jesus’ shame on the cross – exposed, powerless.

We hate  experiencing shame and try to hide.

Difference between guilt and shame

Hebrews 11:33 – 12:2 – Shame is the acute awareness of deficiency of self

The cross was the “tree of shame” for Jesus, where he was  accused, mocked, was powerless and abandoned. He took all our shame as well as guilt upon himself.

John 12:30-33

Galatians 3:13-14 – He bore the curse. So we can be a community not defined by shame.
